Reader: There's no way Elway's would survive if it was called anything else

Two decades ago, Cherry Creek was the heart of Denver's dining scene, with both tried-and-true favorites and inventive new restaurants all over the increasingly chi-chi neighborhood. Although this city's food focus long ago shifted from that part of town, Gretchen Kurtz saw new signs of life at Harman's eat & drink, which she just reviewed. And there are definitely other worthwhile restaurants in the area, including those on our list of the ten best restaurants in Cherry Creek posted here on Friday.

The response was quick. Says Si:

Vinue. And take out Harman's. And Aviano isn't even a restaurant!!

Adds Craig:

Elway's is so overrated. There's no way in hell that restaurant survives if it's called anything else than Elway's. The food is OK and sooooo overpriced.

And then there's this from Chase:

Didn't know there were 10 restaurants in cherry creek.
What restaurants in Cherry Creek do you think are overrated? Underrated? What kind of restaurant would you like to see open in that neighborhood? Post your thoughts below, or join the conversation already under way here.

The steaks are every bit as good as Capital Grille, Del Frisco, Flemming's, and the other Prime steakhouses in town.  The prices are similar to those places too, but I'd agree that the crowd and atmosphere can be a turn off.

I'm sure the Elway name is a major draw.  When I first started going to Elway's though, it was another name that interested me: Tyler Wiard.  There was a time when he was one of the best chefs in town.  I love a good steakhouse, but it doesn't require someone with Wiard's skill and creativity.  It's a waste of his talent.

My one experience at this restaurant was lackluster. We put down a lot of bank to be underwhelmed. We have never returned since. There are too many other amazing restaurants in this city to worry about returning. How's Shanahans? Never been there....would like to go but worried we'll be unimpressed like we were with this sport's guys eatery.

Only been there once. Enjoyed service and meal. This is no different than the auto dealerships with his name. Marketing a brand. Yep.. And considering how bat shit crazy this town is about the Broncos, this establishment should be around for a long time.

Went there (mistake) for my Master's graduation dinner with my mom late 2010. Steaks were so-so, after the waitress finally agreed to have my mom's super-cold steak heated a touch, but not without a half-baked, condescending lecture from this waitress who didn't know what she was talking about (to a lady who has had steak in some of the finest places around). I emailed the place to let them know what had happened (not asking for a thing), but no response, never mind an apology. I'll never go here again, no matter who's buying.

Never ate there. Won't ever unless someone else is buying.

Last two times. Not very impressed. In fact, I was embarrassed with our out town guests.

For a man that tips like an asshole, I thought it funny he would even be in F and B.

It's in cherry creek. Who cares. Cougars and old man douches that like to show off their golf swings.

I contend that Elway's has both great food and excellent service. I have always had a good time at Elway's. In fact, I was thinking of going there tonight for a celebration.

It was great when they first opened. Now it's just mediocre at best.

I haven't been able to afford pricey restuarants for 10 years. They aren't even on my radar.

Too expensive for what you get. Too many of those places here. If his name wasn't attached to it there would be no restaurant

It's a crappier capital grille... that's it.

I think the food and service at Elway's are very good. That being said I only go there when someone else suggests it and that's usually a work related dinner. The "scene" there has become to disgusting, especially on Wednesday evenings during the summer, that I flat out refuse to go there when I have any say in where we're going to eat.

@Chris Heller Spend a little less time posting useless information and more time working and you can probably afford a trip to Noodles and Company by Christmas.

@Keifer Kurre There is nothing crappier than the capital grille. Sizzler puts out a better steak than that palce.

And to be clear the food is well prepared and fresh, but uninspiring. It's your basic steakhouse fare which they do properly. Again, I never say "Hey, let's go grab some steaks at Elways!" I prefer LoHi Steak Bar or my own grill when it comes to beef.
