Taki's closes on East Colfax, ending a two-decade run

Colfax Avenue has seen a lot of changes since Hisashi Takimoto opened Taki's two decades ago. And Taki's went through changes, too, including a couple of locations and a variety of names: Taki's Healthy Japanese Food Restaurant, Taki's Golden Bowl. After Takimoto passed away in 2009, the restaurant got a new owner, Keiho Omine, and earlier this year, it got a major renovation, a new menu and another variation on it's name: Taki's Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar. But regulars reported that it was hard to find a time when Taki's was open -- and now it looks like it could be gone for good.

A sign on the door reports that Taki's has closed.

"Given that the dining room was empty I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only regular customer to turn around and never come back," says one former customer.

"We all miss Taki-san!" says another.

And that miso soup, which regulars swore was better than a shot for fending off the flu.

when it was on the other side of colfax, and was takis golden bowl, it was the best. the interesting man with the fu manchu mustache that worked the counter was my favorite. when my daughter and i would visit, taki himself would bring her a plate of edamame.....it hasn't been the same in years, but it will be missed.

No. I went there once last year. And there were flies everywhere. Not surprised.

As a former employee of Taki's When it was across the street and known as 'Taki's Golden Bowl' His passing marked a dynamic change and was no longer the same without him, i did manage to score one, last, delicious bowl of Ginger Miso Soup before the restaurant met its demise. RIP Takimoto

When Mr. Taki passed the slow decline began. Then they fired the lovely-but-crazy Japanese server who wore the awesome red sequin go-go hat who told hysterically unintelligible stories and brought secret formula soups and teas to cure colds and flus, and that was really the last nail in the coffin. RIP Taki's- Capitol Hill has lost it's finest gem.

Once Taki died, the spirit had left the building...

Is there a decent sushi place near Taki's?  Anywhere from Taki's down towards Stout street? I've been working down here for 4 years, and Taki's was the only place I'd go.

So sad. One of the best places to meet for dinner before a show. Taki's catered our 10th wedding anniversary celebration, and several Xmas parties.

I actually broke down in my high seat over there when I learned he passed. I was shocked to learn pneumonia took him down as I always figured he had a killer immune system from his ginger miso. A sad day in Denver, indeed.

Shitty hipsters with attitudes to match that cannot answer anything about the food being served will close a restaurant with a quickness. I was given wrong information 3x since Taki died, and the lady who took over promptly fired the super friendly but barely understandable Japanese lady who would take orders. She once recognized that I was very sick, then went back into the kitchen and personally made me a family secret tea that made me feel 1000% better-- the second I heard she was axed I saw the writing on the wall. Poor Taki, what a great man- he would be spinning in his grave knowing what it turned into. This place & him kept me alive in the late 90's with HUGE bowls of Miso and vegetables for about $1.50. The place is a Denver icon. It both saddens and angers me that the people who took over allowed this to happen. Taki needs his legacy to live on

My "insider" told me that the new owner had fallen ill, Shannon Ezra Dickey.

I remember when Taki started out next to Denver Drug & Liquor. Too bad, that whole area has almost changed completely since I moved in 2010. Colorado Comics, Wolfe's Barbecue, Jerry's Record Exchange, Play It Again, the Walnut...a lot of great memories/history...

I once had my wallet stolen and inside of it was a Taki's punch card with all ten holes punched. Losing that was my first experience of true loss. Goodbye sweet Taki...goodbye

Such a bummer. I've been going here since I was probably 11 years old. I remember Taki and I will miss him and the ginger miso!

How weird that in October you were reporting on the major renovation and a month later you're reporting on its closure.  Sad, and obviously a large waste of money for the owners.

Sad to see them go but I only tried it a couple of times since Taki died and I could see that it was not going to be around for another couple of decades - just not comparable to Taki's food and warm service.  Eating healthy at the old Taki's helped me take off almost 75 pounds about 15 years ago (God bless the Tofu Udon).  I really needed to drop that weight and I'll always be grateful for their help - they literally saved my life.
