Reader: We know what we like, and it ain't the pizzas at Denver's Pizzeria Locale

Margherita pizza from the Pizzeria Locale in Denver.
It was one of the worst-kept secrets in town: When Frasca's founders decided to bring a version of Pizzeria Locale to Denver, they partnered with Chipotle Mexican Grill to turn the full-service concept into a fast-casual concept with the potential to expand. In her review of Denver's Pizzeria Locale, which opened this past May, Gretchen Kurtz even called it "Pizzeria Locale, Steve Ells-style," since the operation seemed so reminiscent of the fast-casual Chipotle chain founded in Denver two decades before by Ells. And as it turns out, Ells was a silent partner in the project -- but the group is silent no more, and this morning sent out a statement acknowledging Chipotle's role in Pizzeria Locale, which could soon expand two more locations in Denver.

But they won't find some of our readers waiting in line.

Says Denver Dave:

We thought maybe we were just rubes and didn't know from "real" pizza but we know what we like and this ain't it. I'm sure they're printing money though. Maybe we were just setting the bar too high because we love their Boulder stores so much. Honestly, Lean Cuisine's "pizzas" are more flavorful.
How do you like the pizzas at the Boulder Pizzeria Locale? How about the Denver Pizzeria Locale? What are your favorite pizzas in town?

I ate at the Boulder location once. The dough was raw and the prices were high. When we complained they said that was how they serve it in Naples. Maybe so, but we didn't go back.

Nothing is more impressive than food snobs. Don't like the pizza at this place? Then don't fucking eat there. Same with everywhere else.

I love the aholes on these forums... tasted like cardboard... sauce was like ketchup... get the fuck over yourself and knock it off with the ridiculous hyperbole. It's pizza. It tastes like pizza. Gimme a fucking break.

I eat there once in a while because it's a nice change from the other choices in the same complex. I like it. Sauce could be better. Meatballs are boring and in boring sauce. Spice it up!

fully unimpressed with the product. no need to expand

How tiring: pizza experts and snobs decrying everything that isn't "in Boston" or "in NY."

Pizzeria Locale is to pizza what Chipotle is to Mexican food: fresh, tasty, reminiscent, but NOT attempting "genuine." I have eaten "American pizza" in Italy, and I prefer this, except I preferred being in Italy. My one suggestion: ask for light cheese so the fresh tomato taste comes through.

"Lean Cuisine" makes this reader's rant into useless hyperbole from a one-sided whiner. Do I even trust the taste buds of anyone who would put Lean Cuisine Pizza into their mouth?

It's terrific especially at that price. Trolls.

East Coast Italian here, sorry you guys don't what a proper pizza is. If your in the Boston area try Santapiros or Regina. I've never had a good pizza from a chain and I don't think Locale/ Chipotles is going to change that.

The best pizza in Denver is Chicago style and it's at Wyman's No. 5

The pizza is "ok" at best. NYC pizza is just fatty bread with sauce. The comparison is ludicrous. Nothing beats Proto's pizza though.

Lean Cuisine is a bit of an exaggeration.

Crust had no flavor and a tough texture, what I'd imagine trying to eat a piece of cardboard would be like. Can't remember the sauce at all, except that it was scant and yucky, sorta ketchup-like and cheese was basically non-existent. Tasted mostly like eating salt on cardboard, very very very strong taste of salt, which masked the other not pleasant sensations. Even though I was hungry, I trashed it after trying to eat it and ended up eating elsewhere, paid for dinner that night x2. Argh!

Why? I never had it, just curious, being from NYC, so a lot of pizza out here is nasty.

Could be, how much do you think the Westword pays to publish typos on Facebook?

Search the Google for Pizzerias Try to Apply the Chipotle Formula and then click on the WSJ story.

Meanwhile, iPie has been doing this.

Meanwhile, Parisi does a more upscale version of this.

I have to be in a pizza mood in order to eat pizza, which is about twice a year.  I make my own pizza from scratch at home.

@jjbchansen

Having been to Naples several times while in the US Navy, I will say this.  It's not how they serve it there either.

@milleralexjames It's like they say - "Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one" and you're living proof.  Try learning a word or two that doesn't start with "F" and end with "K".

@cantake8 That's a really bad comparison. Pizza is pizza. There is literally nothing Mexican about Chipotle other than the use of the word "burrito."

@foodcrazy I wish I was consistently able to do this successfully. I usually end up just making a big sloppy mess.

Get bent asshole. See, none of those started with an F and ended with a K.

@bondadprevalece@cantake8I wrote "fresh, tasty, reminiscent, but NOT attempting "genuine." What's your point? A lot of people will disagree with your statement "Pizza is pizza." I take it you haven't dined at Pizzeria Locale, otherwise you might have a pertinent comment.

@bondadprevalece It's too bad your lack of reading comprehension doesn't bother you. But you seem to have fun being stupid.

@cantake8 @bondadprevaleceUh, I've dined at both the Boulder and Denver locations, sweetie. Don't be mad because you embarrassed yourself by referring to Chipotle as Mexican food. Chipotle doesn't even attempt to be Mexican food, they put "Mexican" in its description to attract suburban gringoes.
