Big Beers Fest kick-off, culinary classes for the masses tonight
The fourteenth annual Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines Festival starts today and runs through January 11 at the Vail Cascade Hotel and Club. The three-day event features educational seminars, two brewmaster dinners, a commercial tasting, a homebrew competition and other tastings and pairings and kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with the president and brewmaster of Avery Brewing in Boulder, Adam Avery, as well as his co-host for the evening, Sam Calagione, founder and president of Dogfish Head Brewing in Milton, Delaware. The beermasters will introduce the traditional Calibration Dinner that features a double-pairing with brews from both of the hosts' breweries, along with dishes prepared by executive chef Todd Bemis of the Atwater. Although tickets for the dinner are sold out, there are still tickets available for the remainder of the festival. Check out the event website for more details.

The Seasoned Chef Cooking School will host a class from 6:30-9:30pm in order to calm the nerves of those who are intimidated by the bountiful gifts of the sea. Chef Michael Long, one of Denver's most creative and talented professionals, will focus on all things from the sea including how to select choice seafood, preferred cooking techniques as well as menu ideas that you can recreate at home. Tickets are sold out, however you can still join the waiting list for the class here, and see a full schedule of other classes this month on their website.
Countless New Year's resolutions often include promises to eat healthier and lose that holiday weight, although many do not know where to start. In Boulder, the Expo Recreation Center is hosting a "Resolve to Eat Clean in 2014" class from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Learn the difference between super foods versus processed, organic versus GMOs, healthy versus affordable. Students will learn to navigate grocery aisles and restaurant menus in order to increase energy, lose weight -- and still enjoy their food.Tuition runs $46 for residents; $60 for non-residents.
