Sweet Action Ice Cream is in a deep freeze until February 1

Lori Midson

Sure, it's winter, but just because there's a chill in the air doesn't mean that we stop craving ice cream. For proof, just look in my freezer. Nonetheless, the crew from Sweet Action Ice Cream, one of the most popular ice cream spots in the city, is on a month-long holiday according to the sign posted on its door, which reads like a dramatic tearful farewell. And yesterday, when two mothers with their kids in tow hovered in front of the door, their kids were more than tearful: They were downright icy, screaming at the top of their lungs, while their poor moms cursed in mutual fury. The parlor will reopen on February 1 at 1 p.m., but if you can't wait that long, you can buy pints of Sweet Action ice cream at Curtis Park Delicatessen, Denver Urban Homesteading, Fluid Coffee Bar, Hooked On Colfax, the Humble Pie Store, Lucky's Market in Boulder and Longmont, the Uptown location of Marczyk Fine Foods, Nooch | Vegan Market, Pete's Fruits & Vegetables, and at all Tony's Market locations.

But, really, who the hell takes a month's vacation? At least take the advice of a Facebook commenter, who coughed up this suggestion: "You should close in February instead, less time without Sweet Action for the people."

Our culture is way too much "I WANT IT NOW!!!"  Good for these folks, if they want to take the time off.  While they no doubt might lose some business, holding a grudge against them because they want to take a long vacation is silly.

Sweet Action's owners, Chia and Sam,  are two of the hardest working people I know, who are at the store 6-7 days a week.  They take a well deserved break in the slowest month of their year to come up with new flavors and relax.  They have done this for the past five plus years.  Not sure why there was such attitude in this article about it.

Even the regular hours at this place are a joke.  When they aren't on "extended vacation", they don't open the store until 1pm most days.  No thanks.  Some of us don't have the luxury of keeping hipster time.

They do this every January.  Good for them.  Gotta go on New Year's eve and get your fix for the month.
