Wildflower Cafe's veggie breakfast is a garden of eatin'

The Wildflower Cafe can easily be described as "intimate" -- the tiny dining room holds just a half-dozen tables; there's also a minuscule bar area and a couple of tables outside for those willing to brave the elements this time of year. So even if you show up early for weekend brunch, you'll probably find the place full of families and groups of friends stopping off for breakfast on their way to a day on the slopes, if the snow pants and goggles adorning the diners are any indication.

Despite the restaurant's small size, the brunch menu is big, with plenty of veggie-friendly options, including the Aztec Supreme omelette (pictured above), three eggs cooked with green chiles, onions, salsa and avocado and topped with a melted jack/cheddar blend. It's served with the Wildflower's deservedly famous "wild" potatoes, which are fried to a crisp before being plated up with the eggs.

The Florentine plate boasts poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, onion, tomato, spinach and mushrooms on an English muffin. The hollandaise sauce is housemade, and so creamy and tangy that it's worth a trip up the hill just to try it -- and those wild potatoes are perfect for soaking up the extra sauce.

You can also order pancakes, French toast and a two-egg "boring breakfast" suitable for vegetarians. Although the dishes sound fairly typical fare for any breakfast joint, the quality of the ingredients and how they're prepared push this eatery into the "great" zone. This is a breakfast that you'll be thinking about all day -- and fortunately, it's served all day at the Wildflower, which opens at 7:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and 8 a.m. Sunday.

The Wildflower is at 28035 Highway 74 in Evergreen; visit wildflowerevergreen.com or call 303-674-3323.
