The Volt is not and electric car (aka EV), it is a plug-in-hybrid (phev/pih) that can use gasoline, so it is also not an example of an alternative to gasoline. A pih is not a bad vehicle, it is just not an EV. Both EVs and pih each have their pros and cons.

It is important that the public learn about each of them, and not make the mistake the media outlet spew by lumping the two as EVs (they are not, they are different).

The best way to learn about the plugin (the term mean either an EV or a pih) you are interested in, use the free online forums to ask questions and get truthful & informative answers from actual owners (do not bother with the dealership sales reps, they just want to make a quick sale. And do not listen to media writers, most are clueless.

Learn the facts, and the public will decide for themselves whether to buy an EV, pih, or a high mpg gas car. If you chose either of the latter two, learn to enjoy grumbling about the high price of petrol and vehicle maintenance.
