Rio on the Rocks: Baseball fans will get a taste of Rio Grande margs this season

Rio Grande margs will be available on the Rocks -- of course! -- at Coors Field.
Opening day is less than a month away, and sports fans are licking their lips over the promise of a new season. And some margs from Rio on the Rocks, a ballpark branch of Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant, the homegrown chain that got its start in Fort Collins 27 years ago, and is known for its legendary house margaritas. Those margs are sure to be a hit at Coors Field, where the Rio will join the lineup in April.

At Rio on the Rocks, starting on opening day fans will be able to purchase the traditional Rio marg, either frozen or on the rocks), as well as strawberry and mango versions -- but as at any of the restaurants, the limit will be three per customer.

"I always categorize it simply as good advice," says Pat McGaughran, founder/owner of the Rio Grande chain. "The margaritas are very strong, so for the average person it's just good advice, because you want to continue having fun for the rest of your day and the rest of your night."

Located on the mezzanine level in right centerfield, the 3,964 square-foot Rio on the Rocks will have room for 222 guests and several seats available for regular ticket purchase. In addition to the margs, the spot will also offer a limited version of the regular Rio menu, including housemade salsa and chips, queso and guacamole.

"Rio Grande has been in business and successful in Colorado for nearly 28 years and we feel the identity of Rio Grande and Colorado will be very much strengthened by a partnership with the Colorado Rockies. It enhances the identity of Rio Grande," McGaughran says, adding that he began to get serious about that partnership several years ago.

"We know the principal at the Rockies and we actually have a long-term friendship and relationship with them, so it feels really good to team up with them because of that strong connection," he notes.

Rio on the Rocks comes with numerous promotions for game-goers and Rio patrons alike. The Rockies Rewards program will offer half-price Rio margs at any Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant (not including Rio on the Rocks) on certain game days. And through this season, every time the Rockies hit a grand slam, fans will get one Rio marg for half-price when they bring their Rockies ticket stub into any of those non-ballpark locations.

Those locations include the flagship store in LoDo, just five blocks from Coors Field, as well as restaurants in Boulder, Greeley, Fort Collins, Park Meadows and Steamboat Springs; a new spot is opening this fall in Frisco.
