Reader: The name Comrade Brewing is like calling a place Kristallnacht Klub

David Lin welcomes you to Comrade Brewing.
Comrade Brewing Company opened this weekend in southeast Denver, an area thirsty for more beery options. But will the name draw many comrades? "There are lots of double meanings, but it is all in fun," says owner David Lin. "The only thing we take seriously here is the beer. The rest: not so much. If I really wanted to take communism seriously, I would have bought my equipment from China."

Says theFabulousMarkT:

They are just gonna cling to that name come hell or high water, aren't they?

But at the same time, I hope they understand why some folks (especially those of a certain age - raises hand) might be a little unsettled by that choice of moniker.

I mean, it would be like opening a place called Kristallnacht Klub and then wondering why people's undies are so bunched.

What do you think of the name Comrade Brewing? What other controversial names have created a buzz on the Denver dining scene?

As a beer lover I'm confused because I love trying new beer and supporting local brewpubs but I fought for this country, I hate communism and I'm Jewish. But I need more information before I boycott this brewery.

I dont find this offensive at all. I do find it offensive how the Denver Westword continues to manipulate stories and headlines to try and get publicity. Why cant you just write an article that is good and gives facts for the reader to garner there own opinions. I feel you leave a lot out to push an agenda or to try and make a story out of nothing.

The USSR doesn't exist anymore anyway. We have bigger issues these days.

It's near my house. The minute I saw it I was interested!

Oh here we go. C'mon Westword. Why not post a question for readers to discuss whether or not Sarah Palin is fit to be president of the U.S.?

I hope they don't enjoy camaraderie there. Oh no!

Oh, you like me. :D You really like me!

I guess both I and the brewery have conclusively proven once again that these days, no press is truly bad press. #gous

I don't really think it's that offensive. Is it? I like Russian Hockey and stuff. Comrades. Kristalnacht way different if you're Jewish.

Austin TX has a place similar to this called Molotov that also uses the soviet union's flag. so far no one has opened a Kristallnacht Klub, though

It's not offensive at all! Nearly everything to do with the production of his beer is American-made and the beer is great! Like David says...it should be all about the beer and the rest is fun. Great atmosphere, a sense of humor, and something different than all the other beer places...I like it. In fact, I'm rooting for it!

Comrade is a beautiful title. Comrade is the only title which takes no account of class, age, sex, marital status, education, or ethnicity.

The word "comrade" is also used by our United States servicemen & women to refer to one another. How ridiculous is this? Comrade? lol. That word is totally offensive to me.....lol.....people are such morons, and westword doubly so for even entertaining the question if this is offensive

I'm happy to go there to not run into MarkT.  I wouldn't enjoy a beer sitting next to the type of folks who are "unsettled by that choice of a moniker."  Anywhere.

I think most of the known world realizes that old style USSR Communism is pretty well over. Many of us older people remember fighting in Viet Nam to keep Communism from marching down to Australia  and at our front door, now our kids are buying T-shirts made in the Peoples Republic of Viet Nam.

For someone to drag up the old Comrade name to use for his restaurant just goes to show how historically irrelevant the name has become.

As for the brewery, I'm only offended that they're NOT communist.

So....you're asking on the interwebz if someone is going to be offended???

It was also Kristallnacht every day in Stalinist Russia with how Jews were murdered and sent to the Gulags in Siberia. Land and money collectivized. Russia has a long tradition of persecuting Jews. Obomber is supporting Nazis in the Ukraine so who cares? Many of them are wearing the 2nd SS armbands. And that is now!

I think it is sweet. I cannot wait to take my comrades there.

It's clear that you just posted this nonsense to get clicks. It's possible to generate buzz and clicks and advertising revenue without this kind of bottom-of-the-barrel trick. You could write some real journalism, and people would pay attention.

"Fabulous" MarkT needs to a) clean the sand out of his vagina and b) understand that it's a bit of a reach to compare "Comrade" to Kristalnacht...

No, it's not offensive. What's offensive is someone thinking the name is offensive.

Right now the name appears to be working more in their favor than against - it's getting them noticed and free publicity. If the beer is any good, the name will serve them well. If it's not, or too many people are offended*, then people will vote with their money, and they will be forgotten. --------------- *it's just a name, get over it.

haha!  Pay attention!  Putin is trying to return to and revitalize the old empire.  Only this time it will allow religion - as long as you are Russian Orthodox.

Clearly it IS offensive to some.  And David is full of shit.  If it was not about the name and only about the beer, he wouldn't be using the name.

And I am sure he is hating all the free publicity over his no-matter name.

Look at the logo again and tell me they're referring to US armed forces...

Now, you were saying something about morons? :D

TheFabulousMarkT

@DougHubka Well, given the flurry of commentary here, perhaps "irrelevant" isn't quite the right word :) but point taken.

Well, aren't you thoughtful for inquiring after my vagina. :D It's remarkably un-gritty at the moment thanx.

So tell me, do you find it occupies your mind a lot of the time?

@TheFabulousMarkT @Harvey Were you "unsettled" by my comment?

TheFabulousMarkT
TheFabulousMarkT topcommenter

@Harvey Oh, it takes a lot to faze me :D But you know what's funny? When I got notification of your response in my email, it didn't have your message, just your name.

Do you think the mail gremlins are a bit skittish this evening?
