Reader: The best hamburger is a cheeseburger with ketchup, mustard, mayo and pickles -- nothing else

Green chile cheeseburger at Five Star Burgers.
The weather will be great today, making this an ideal day to enjoy a burger on an outdoor patio -- maybe a green chile cheeseburger, in honor of Cinco de Mayo. But don't head to theFive Star Burgers at Sixth and Broadway. That link in a small, New-Mexico based chain closed abruptly late last month, although a second outpost in Centennial is still open.

That's okay. The best hamburger is a cheeseburger (American cheese) with ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and dill pickles. Nothing else.

Unless you are at Park Burger, which is the best burger spot in town.

I think there's room in the world for basic, no-frills burgers like Grandpa's and Bud's as well as burgers with a little more going on - sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions, flavorful cheeses, green chile, avocado, bacon, onion rings, jalapeño cream cheese, signature sauces, etc. Life's too short to limit flavor and creativity. Sure, it gets to the point where the toppings can overwhelm the beef, but plenty of toppings accentuate the overall burgerness of a good burger.

I believe it was St. Jimmy of Buffet that instructed us in the proper make-up of creating the perfect Cheeseburger in Paradise. All others are a true abomination.

One of the best, and one-time winner of the Best of Denver hamburger, is Grampa's Burger Haven on S. Federal, past Alameda. Great old-fashioned burger with no la-ti-da pretense.
