Chipotle raises prices, but only in Denver so far

Chipotle eaters may not be too thrilled the next time they head to their nearest location: the Denver-based company has raised its prices by about 25 cents per item -- bringing chicken tacos and burritos up to $6.75 and after tax, $7.02.

It's the first time in three years that Chipotle has raised prices and so far, the increase has only been implemented in Denver.

"Food costs are soaring," explains Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold. Steak alone has jumped 25 percent since the beginning of the year, but chicken, cheese and avocados have been rising steadily as well.

The company "generally raises prices very much as a last resort," he adds.

Not only did the chicken, steak, carnitas, softritas and veggie prices go up, but chips and guacamole prices also rose. According to businessweek.com, the avocado shortage, caused by the drought in California, is to blame. The production of avocados could face a 30 percent drop.

Eventually, the chain will likely raise prices for all locations around the country.

Totally concur with Melissa. I was skimped on each ingredient that I grew so fond of in the early days twice in the same day, resulting in saggy, half full burrito that I intended to last 2 days reduced to one meal. Also wouldn't allow me to get salsa on the side to prevent future sogginess? I informed the manager of both stores in the Littleton area to no compensation. And now they're rising prices... Honestly fuck Chipotle and everything that has transpired in their company from what used to be my favorite post-ride burrito. Qdoba still hooks it up!

Avocado's are getting radiation, the prices have sky rocketed due to liberal media on 'illegals'. Food regions prices change when 'we' help them in sales just as... oh, never mind, I'll be on this for a day.

Pete's! Even since the changing of staff over the years.

Id rather cook at home..than I knowb who touch's my food. People who eat out are 2 times more likely to get sick. Food for thought.

It is a higher quality of food, stop whining. Prices only go up, not down. The consumers will absorb the cost. They always will.

I used to work here, and I don't mind paying more for the high quality of food. All the ingredients are handled with care, and food with integrity is something worth paying the extra price for.

Ate there once and never again, it sucks!

Pete's. Better in every single way.

I was saying that eventually with rising costs and the economy what it is, it could happen that they shoot themselves in the foot. I've stopped going. There are better places. But, I also found a huge plastic piece in my food and their reaction was anything but how you would want a clean establishment to act. They treated me like a liar.... Till I brought in proof. Anywho, to each their own.

Raise the minimum wage and this will be the trend everywhere.

More profit and they can't hire illegals. Corporate informed me coldly that one shaken spoon of meat IS the measurement for their burritos. I was so proud of them and now just feel shafted. DO THE RIGHT THING!

Doubtful... record profits AND considering their natural/organic foods, the place is a bargain!

Still fair prices, IMO. It is a higher quality of ingredient.

You want real Mexican food, go to Mexico. Not the Tex-Mex B.S.

They raise prices, but seem to give less food. I have to ask for double chicken just to get what used to be a single serving.

The things that really drive up your check at Chipotle and places like them are not the burrito or entree itself but rather, the 2.50 for a big ass cup of sugar and carbonic acid and the side of chips and salsa, etc. I'll still enjoy my Chipotle salad or burrito bowl with my water and not whine because it cost me 20 cents more than it did last year.

And there wasn't even a minimum wage increase. Hmmmmm. This inflation hoax might not be a hoax after all?

I don't understand why they would raise prices in the state that made Chipotle relevant rather than in subsidiary markets. Bad business in my opinion. I can deal with rising prices, but they have gotten so skimpy on the food too, it's a double whammy. The tortillas are smaller, less rice, meat, cheese, etc. Shame, shame Chipotle.

Ha. I don't even eat their food anymore. Fresh is better and cheaper too!

Oh shit, everyone is fighting over which brand is better. Its nice to know that people are still petty when it comes to 3 restaurants that mostly the same with like 3 differences.

You guys go to Taco Bell and leave the rest of us that don't want to put garbage in our bodies at the chipotle counter. If I want a sarcastic hipster to judge my outfit and be rude to me ill go to illegal Pete's or wait even better urban outfitters. I'll pay the 20 cents because I understand the concept of a global market/drought/inflation/living wage/something a lot of people on this post clearly don't comprehend.

Wrong they took a loan and replayed it McDonald's does NOT own chipotle, your info is a decade old but nice try

The food they use in their meals is not nearly as high-quality ingredients compared to Chipotle. But go ahead.

One of the worst places to work and their employees are under paid. I worked there for a year and a half busting my ass and trying to work by their ridiculous standards. They finally fired me because I didn't 'smile enough' and this was after I previously put my two weeks notice in after finding better opportunities at another job.... which I then gave up when Chipotle begged me to stay and promised they would train me as a kitchen manager. They tricked and convinced me not to leave and to give up another opportunity. Just to start my training.... never complete it with me and decide to fire me. I never knew how over worked and under paid I was there till I was removed from The picture and found another job. And let's be real here i was the only white person who didn't speak Spanish there and you better believe they would talk about you between themselves in soanish and laugh. I used to hear my name all the time in conversations... oh the agony of the memories. Never again will i work for such a shitty company.
