Society Sports & Spirits takes over for Stoney's Full Steam Tavern

A year ago the owners of Stoney's Bar & Grill at 1111 Lincoln Street took on the space at 1434 Blake Street that has been many, many things over the years -- starting with City Spirit and, most recently, Full Steam Tavern -- and named it Stoney's Full Steam Tavern. But with the Stoney's crew now focusing on Krewe, the barbecue joint they opened next door to the original Stoney's, Stoney's Full Steam was running out of steam. So now Wil Evans, who used to work at Stoney's, and his business partner, Rich Canaday, have taken over the spot and turned it into Society Sports & Spirits.

Society is designed as a neighborhood bar where folks can shoot a game of pool and watch a game, Evans says. And while pool tables have been added on the second level, it can still be set up for huge game-watching parties with alumni groups. Right now, Society is gearing up for the World Cup, just as Full Steam partnered with the Rapids to do some watch parties during the last World Cup.

Not surprisingly, Evans has gotten a lot of questions about the black, oval-shaped "WHISKEY" sign that hangs over the front door. "Well, it's like a barbershop pole," he explains. "You see that red-and-white pole, you know you can get a haircut. If you see a whiskey barrel on a stick, you know you're going to be able to order whiskey So we've had a lot of walk-ins just because of that." While Evans won't say that Society has the biggest collection of Colorado whiskeys, he bets it comes close, with about 36 kinds of locally made whiskey.

Instead of sports memorabilia hanging on the walls of the main level, there's now art by local artists. Evans says that Society has been selling quite a bit of art; he plans to change the works every month.

Society also has a brand-new menu; Evans says the kitchen just added a chicken-fried BLT: chicken fried bacon on a croissant. There's also a chicken-fried bacon appetizer that includes whiskey dipping sauce, and the Redneck Gourmet, a mini-grilled cheese sandwich that you dip in queso and ranch. "It's drunk bar food but everything kind of has a twist to it," Evans says.

Society plans to keep things social with a lineup of weekly events, including 8-Bit night on Tuesdays, when the staff plugs in old-school video games like Nintendo, Sega and Atari, and trivia on Wednesdays. The second Friday of every month is Bluegrass Friday, featuring a local distillery, a brewery and a bluegrass band -- and the whiskey, beer and music is free.
