From Guatemala to Denmark, a taste of this week's culinary calendar
Roughly 1,000 years ago in the highlands of Guatemala, a member of the Maya civilization lifted a clay vessel -- adorned with an intricate jaguar figure -- to his lips and took a slug of something. Beer? Corn liquor? Something else? Last May, two scientists from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and Denver Beer Co's Patrick Crawford tried to find out what it was by chemically evaluating...the backwash. Ah, science. Named Tipsy Tzolk'in in honor of the Maya calendar, the beer was brewed three weeks ago -- you can read Garneau's full report of that day on her Genetics of Taste blog -- and will be served on Monday, July 21, during the museum's Science on Tap night at Denver Beer Co. The event runs from 5:30 to 9 p.m.; tickets are $30 for museum Young Professional members, $35 others. Find out more here.

Never Summer Industries and Breckenbridge Brewery have teamed up to create a limited design Artist Series Snowboard. At 7 p.m. tonight, the designs created by artists ranging from Karl Urso to Jonathan Lamb of Like Minded Productions will be unveiled at Matchbox The party starts at 7 p.m., and attendees can get a complimentary Breck beer until 8 p.m.

The Scandinavian dinner series at Trillium returns with a four-course meal by chef/owner Ryan Leinonen devoted to Denmark. The dinner is $70 (plus tax and tip) and includes wine/cocktail/beer pairings. To RSVP, call 303-379-9759.
The community table at Firenze a Tavola, downstairs at Parisi, will feature special dishes to beat the heat. The dinner is $33 per person, excluding tax, gratiuity and beverages, and starts at 6 p.m. Find more information here.
