After two years, Harold's and the Bayonet Room, the farm-to-table restaurant in Longmont's Best Western Plaza Hotel, served its final dish this past Saturday. Fortunately for hungry Longmont residents, the space is now being renovated for a new concept from Dave Oehlman, owner of the two Smokin' Dave's BBQ & Taphouse restaurants.

"After operating Harold's for several years, we were re-addressing the market and the product that we had, and we were considering bringing in additional items on the menu, like smoked items, barbecue items," says Alan Linton, president of the Plaza Hotel Corporation. Previously, Harold's had focused on New American dishes with local ingredients: "Big city food with small town service," as the restaurant's slogan went.

"In the process of entertaining that, I was informed that David was considering Longmont," Linton adds. "With that, we struck up a conversation."

The new concept will be called House of Q BBQ & Brew, and it will be quite similar to the existing Smokin' Dave's BBQ joints in Lyons and Estes Park. "He's going to bring the same menu, the same recipes to our facility," Linton says, "from the top filet mignon to all of the smoked plates to a brined catfish that's very good as well." The restaurant's Bayonet Lounge, one of the few true cocktail lounges in Longmont, will continue pouring craft cocktails and local brews, albeit from a larger bar and with a fresh coat of paint.

The planned opening for the House of Q is mid-August. "Everything they've done in the past with Smokin' Daves has been great, and so with this we welcome them into our management group, and we look forward to adding a different taste of smoke to the Longmont community," Linton says.
