Reader: Denver's BBQ Scene Is Truly Insufficient

Burt's fired up the smoker this weekend.
In Ethniche, Mark Antonation has been exploring barbecue all month; his final installment on 'cue runs tomorrow. And even as he's explored options around town, like Brooks Smokehouse, new places keep opening up, including Burt's Smokehouse BBQ, now smokin' in Centennial. But still, readers are hungry for more -- and better -- barbecue joints.

Brooks Smokehouse takes its barbecue on the road.
Says Josh:
I'm hoping these new places are good, as the majority don't have any sort of smokey taste at all. Must be all the kale people love. On the plus side over the last year I've perfected making ribs and brisket at home.

Adds Jonathan:
Denver's BBQ scene....truly insufficient. In its infancy.
What do you think of Denver's barbecue scene? What are your favorite spots around town?

There is a new joint opening up in September.  It is called Brewshine BBQ and it is great.  It is downtown, just 7 blocks from Bronco's stadium.  BBQ, Craft Beers and Moonshine.  Doesn't get better.

I would agree that Denver over the years has been lacking in quality BBQ joints. Two places give me hope that it's starting to stretch it's BBQ legs. Wayne's Smoke shack in Superior is as close as it gets to true Texas BBQ ,especially the brisket and pork. The other is Georgia Boys. If you are truly suffering BBQ withdrawals , try these two places.

I'm from Chicago and lived out here for 10years. I think every region has its own taste. Colorado pretty new to BBQ compared to other states. I think in time Colorado with its crafty people will be one of a kind. I smoke and BBQ myself for many years and I love the new Flavor of cottonwood. Its very mellow flavor and its everywhere make sure its seasoned for two years

There's not a ton to whine about with Jabo's, Country Time, Boney's, and Wayne's Smoke Shack all within the Metro area. Just got to know where to look.

I find that I make better BBQ than any place in town. And I have fun doing it, so...

Boney's in Lodo is actually not bad, but most are overdoing it. There was a place out in Westminster that I used to go to religiously called Hoke's but it shut down due to lack of demand. I've also done the BBQ challenge/fest up in Frisco, and was wholly unimpressed. Really, nothing in Colorado stacks up to the hole in the wall joints I've eaten at in Texas and Oklahoma - places run by families who have been doing it in their neighborhoods for decades. I don't even buy BBQ sauce around here, none of the stuff on the shelf competes with mail order sauce from Head Country or Dinks out of Bartlesville, OK (the top shelf stuff at Whole Foods is really low quality in general, just put in expensive packaging and sold to soccer moms who don't know better).

My biggest problem is paying out the ass, for tiny portions. Give me what I paid for.

Inexplicably bad. However, Georgia Boys BBQ in Longmont and Firestone is the truth.

BBQ places keep shutting down because there is no demand for it.

It seems that a bunch of BBQ enthusiasts think their BBQ is the best and they decide to open a restaurant only to find out that 95% of the Colorado population doesn't care to eat overcooked meat slathered in spicy ketchup.

I love all this hand-wringing that Westword instigates about something that is, frankly, not a thing at all. Who cares if Denver doesn't have "great" BBQ? You don't see people from Texas or Memphis bemoaning their lack of a truly great Mexican hamburger.

@WillieStortz ... you mean GOOD BBQ has no demand in Denver, which supports plenty of mediocre and crappy Q that manage to stay open for decades, like Brothers BBQ, Famous Daves, Dickeys, etc.

Moe's, on N. Broadway, is quite good, as is the one in Boulder.

Georgia Boys in Longmont is the best in the metro area.

@WillieStortz LOL, give me a break. Native Coloradans singlehandedly keep McDonald's of BBQ restaurants alive like Brothers and Dickey's. I have had native Coloradans actually argue with me that Brothers is the best BBQ they've ever eaten. Don't blame other people for trying to bring decent BBQ to a state who doesn't understand it.

Because the people from Texas and Memphis have great BBQ, they don't need no stinkin' Mexican hamburgers.
