Thanks to a recent influx of pizza palaces, I've eaten way, way too much of the stuff over the past week, including at this restaurant, which, while new, isn't as new as some. In fact, it's been around long enough that the kitchen should have its pizza down pat, but in this case, the Greek salad was far better than the lukewarm slices.

Cafe Society served up four Guess Where? contests last week, ranging from a mouth-numbing Colorado spirit poured at an Italian restaurant that has yet to be identified, to a old-fashioned from Bull & Bush, to a plate of fantastic tacos from a still-unnamed taqueria, to a scallop pooled in squid ink.

I can't imagine what you'd do with this Colorado spirit, which makes your mouth, lips and gums go numb -- a lot like Sichuan peppercorns -- but there's at least one restaurant and bar that's conjuring up ways to use the spirit in cocktails. Still, this has got to be the strangest liquid I've ever put in my mouth.

Talk about a cheap lunch: six tacos and a large pineapple agua fresca for $14. And these aren't your average street tacos. In fact, in my humble opinion, these are the best street tacos in town -- and the excellent salsa bar isn't far behind.

At last night's dinner -- a birthday celebration for one of the most amazing fathers I've ever known -- we feasted on everything from beet carpaccio to sweetbreads, but the star of the show was the single grilled scallop pooled in a puddle of squid ink.

Before I drank beer and long before I drank wine, I was drinking classic Old-Fashioned cocktails, probably because that's what my parents drank nearly every night while I still lived at home. And now, more than twenty years later, I still love the drink. And last night, at the bar where I drank it, the bartender was more than happy to make me one, which is saying something, if only because every other peep at the bar was knocking back beers -- and that makes sense, because this is a pub that turns out terrific brews...and just happens to pour a killer Old-Fashioned, too.
