Vegetarian palates get jazzed over Dazzle's happy hour

Categories: Veggie Girl

The happy hour at Dazzle has always been a thing of beauty: $3 craft beers, $4 glasses of wine and an array of foods ranging in price from $3.75 to $6.75, catering to both carnivorous and plant-based palates. There's often live music in the lounge, and all the shaken cocktails come with a dance served up at your table, making Dazzle the perfect post-work stop for a drink while you wait for traffic to wind down. Or you can hit the late-night happy hour.

Denver has plenty for the discerning plant-based diner, especially pizza. This town has so many good vegan pies that it's getting increasingly tough to pick a favorite. One thing we know for sure: The vegan and vegetarian pizzas at Sexy Pizza are swoon-worthy, especially on that delectable, decadent, perfectly baked crust.

Wazee Supper Club taps into vegetarian fare

Categories: Veggie Girl

wazee-veggie-pita.jpg
Denver has no shortage of places serving up delicious, locally brewed beers with solid food offerings -- and the venerable, revamped Wazee Supper Club is one of them. The beer list is as big as (if not bigger than) the food menu, which features your typical bar offerings -- burgers, wings -- with some extras like pizza and a bruschetta plate thrown in. Fortunately, the Wazee didn't forget about the plant-eating community when putting that menu together.

Veggie Girl: The five best things I ate last year

tarascos-flautas.jpg

This past year was a good one for vegan food in Denver, what with the opening of Nooch and the continued success of such events as VegFest and other regular gatherings of herbivores. And I reaped the rewards eating out for Veggie Girl, because local restaurants have really stepped up their game. Here are the five best meals I ate this year:

Tarasco's New Latin Cuisine is hot for veggies, too

Categories: Veggie Girl

tarascos-flautas.jpg
It's not that easy to find vegetarian-friendly (let alone vegan-friendly) Mexican food; between lard in the refried beans and chicken stock in the rice or green chile, there's no telling what animal products might be lurking in the foods you order. That's why we just love places like Tarasco's New Latin Cuisine, which has an entire page devoted to vegetarian options, many of them vegan-friendly, too. It's nice to be spoiled with so many choices when you're used to being limited to one or two dishes...and the food is so inexpensive, you can order three or four items for what you might pay for one elsewhere.

Bono's Italian Takeout is quick, easy and veggie-friendly

Categories: Veggie Girl

With holiday preparations filling the calendar, who has time to sit in a restaurant and linger over a meal? For that matter, who has time to cook a meal? Right now, takeout is looking pretty good -- and there are several good reasons to try Bono's Italian Takeout. The takeout/lunch menu at this family-run restaurant is notably cheaper than the eat-in menu; the food is ready in ten to fifteen minutes; and there are several veggie-friendly options on the menu.

Mellow Mushroom gives vegan eaters a pizza the action

Categories: Veggie Girl

mellow-mushroom-thai-vegan.jpg
Mellow Mushroom seemed like the perfect place to celebrate the passage of Amendment 64, what with its giant, color-changing psychedelic mushroom motif. But this pizza chain is based in Atlanta, and last time we checked, Georgia wasn't anywhere close to legalizing marijuana. Still, we'll give a thumbs-up to Mellow Mushroom's vegan and vegetarian options any day.

Crema's vegan-friendly coffee and vegetarian-friendly breakfasts are cream of the crop

Categories: Veggie Girl

crema-quiche.jpg
The coffee alone makes Crema worth a stop -- which is both good and bad news for this city's vegans, because if you stop for the coffee, you won't be able to get any Beet Box vegan baked goods. The coffeeshop recently stopped carrying Beet Box products and instead is making everything in-house -- and while the goods look delicious, vegan and gluten-free options are still on the horizon.

If you don't mind a little egg and dairy in your breakfast, though, you'll be well-satisfied with everything Crema has to offer.

Volcano's veggie sushi lunch explodes with flavor

Categories: Veggie Girl

volcano-sushi.jpg
Vegetarian lunch specials are special indeed, because while restaurants around town offer meaty specials at the noon hour, vegetarian specials are usually only offered at vegetarian restaurants. Volcano is an unexpected exception to that rule. It's one of a growing number of non-chain restaurants in the southeast Denver area, prime real estate for office workers seeking...lunch specials.

Some of them even seeking vegetarian specials.

Photos: WaterCourse's harvest dinner was a decadent vegan/vegetarian delight

Chef Rachel Kesley, the kitchen magician at WaterCourse Foods, doesn't get to deviate from the menu all that often -- so when she does get the chance, you know it's going to be a meal to remember. This past Friday's harvest dinner was inspired by pinots from the Pacific Northwest and was themed around food from the region -- amazing, inspired food.
