Potential Fashions and $535,000 Worth of Car

Tue May 29, 2007 at 11:51:10 AM

Lana%20001.JPG
The Summer Guide is finally over, done, gone to the printer. It will be in your hot hands on June 7. In the meantime, Cat will be posting some outtakes from the fashion photo shoot. Today, behold Lana Russell in a custom dress by her sister, Tricia Hoke, and Kymberly Robertson for Potential Fashions. She’s also sitting in a $135,000 Aston Martin (above) and a $400,000 (below) Porsche from The Motorsports Gallery. (No, Cat did not accidentally add extra zeros.)

Sarah Jessica Parker is "Bitten," and Versace at Costco

Fri May 25, 2007 at 11:22:29 AM

sjpbittenoprah02-070521.jpg
The new Sarah Jessica Parker line “Bitten,” which Cat’s been asked about, debuts next week – at Steve & Barry’s. Cat had never heard of this fine mall retailer, so she went to find our nearest outpost, assuming it would be in Chicago or Austin. No, my fine friends, there are four Steve & Barry’s in Colorado from which you can indulge in your Carrie Bradshaw fantasy. But none in Denver. You’ll have to trek to Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Longmont or Littleton.

The good: Each of the pieces is less than $20, and they’re supposed to fit girls up to a size 22. The bad: It looks like anything you can buy at Wal-Mart, but with a fancier label. No need to drive the extra distance for this line.

Perfect Petal's Chain Chandelier

Thu May 24, 2007 at 02:25:13 PM

ChainChandelier.jpg
Cat is still really tied up with the Summer Guide. We shot yesterday from 6 p.m. to almost 1 a.m. -- a good portion of it in the rain. So for everyone involved, thank you for your patience and good humor.

Just a short post today, a photo actually. Cat and Cheese Bikini found this chandelier at The Perfect Petal. It's the physical manifestation of Cat's life: all modern and citified, but based on something so basic and blue collar. When she was growing up, Cat used to coil and hang (much heavier) loops of chain for her excavator daddy. Cat's proud of where she comes from, and she gets all sentimental when her worlds collide. She'd take home this memento, but that would presume Cat had a room big enough for it (no way) and that she had an extra $5,000 (sadly, no). So she'll just go in and gaze every so often.

Sweetie Advice

Cat is out today, working on a photo shoot for Westword's annual Summer Guide, which comes out on June 7. The entire guide features fashions by local designers and from local shops. You won't want to miss it.

In the meantime, here's a sage piece of advice from one of Cat's favorite style guides:

Never forget to moisturize your neck. One day it might be your face.

In Search of the Perfect Pair of Jeans

Tue May 22, 2007 at 11:14:08 AM

Jag%20Jeans.jpg

Jag%20Jeans%202.jpg
The perfect pair of jeans, the ones that make your bum look pert and thighs slim, are elusive. A mythical creature, almost. Like a fashion-industry unicorn. Sure, there’s always the promise that if you just pay the three figures for the Sevens or the Paper Denim & Cloth they'll take off that extra ten pounds hanging out over the top of the Old Navy pair you kick around the house in. Wrong.

Denver Style Makes the New York Times. Yawn.

Mon May 21, 2007 at 12:11:19 PM

20mile600.1.jpg

Some of Denver’s favorite local boutiques made the New York Times Travel section on Sunday. There was a great deal of buzz and excitement when the photographer and reporter were out here a few months ago, and after all the waiting for our fifteen minutes of fame, here’s what the Times had to say: nothing. Capital N nothing. Exactly 202 words, mostly made up of addresses and phone numbers.

Picture Perfect Fashions

Fri May 18, 2007 at 12:11:02 PM

DavidYurman.jpg

While Cat’s on the Vogue kick, here are a few of the ads that just popped. I mean, seriously, don’t we all read fashion mags for the ads, anyway? The words are sort of incidental. (Although, Cat always flips immediately and directly to Vogue's “Nostalgia” column. The pieces are always witty, interesting and provocative, something that brings a deeper understanding of fashion or the way we live.)

Anyway, Kate Moss just looks stunning in this David Yurman ad – and Cat isn’t a huge fan of either Moss or Yurman. So congrats on the pair making two wrongs such a right.

Paul Poiret is en Vogue

vogue%201.jpg

Cat spent a good portion of last night sitting in a hospital room, waiting for her friend Dominique to pop out her first sprog. Let’s just say it wasn’t easy going, so Cat had plenty of time to finally read the May Vogue. And by read, Cat means flip through and look at the pretty pictures.

Overall, Cat was nonplussed by the fashion spreads, except for the piece on Paul Poiret, the turn-of-the-last-century designer who redefined fashion. As Vogue’s Hamish Bowles puts it:

Jaslene is America's Next Top Model

Thu May 17, 2007 at 11:19:00 AM

Jaslene.jpg

The other big shocker of Wednesday night was Jaslene taking home the America's Next Top Model contract. Cat didn't really have any opinion either way -- she was pretty meh on this cycle all together -- but odds makers were not favoring the lovely Latina lady. So yay for her! (She does rock a swimsuit.)

Here's the photo gallery of her looks through the show.

Rick Owens, the Original Jeffrey Sebelia?

RickOwens.jpg

RickOwens2.jpg

Scenes from Rick Owens's Spring 2007 collection. (Photos by First Look.)

Last night’s National Design Awards were a shocker, at least in the fashion category: Rick Owens beat out both Narciso Rodriguez and Phillip Lim for the ten-year-old honor bestowed by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.

Inca29Brownstone.jpg
Wednesday, May 16
JSG Designer Showhouse
The only thing Cat likes as much as clothes porn is real estate porn, and right now there’s some serious flesh on display over at 2900 Inca Street. For the 32nd year, the Junior Symphony Guild has teamed up with some of the best interior designers in town to put together two dream houses, this time in the modern brownstones that make up the Inca 29 project. One was created for the “global couple” the other for the “modern family.”

JSG Designer Showhouse
2900 Inca Street
Open through May 20
11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today; meet the designers from 4 to 7 p.m.
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday
