Michael O’Neal of Altitude Exchange admits he’s more hip to the men’s fashion scene, but that doesn’t mean he and partner David Shoulz don’t know quality girl garb when it comes knocking at the door. When faced with the opportunity to pick up some 700 overstock women’s swimsuits and summery cover-ups from the likes of Macy’s and Nordstrom at next-to-nothing prices, “no” was never an option. The entrepreneurial duo will host a blowout Women's Swimsuit Warehouse Sale this weekend at another brand-new venture, Common Threads Boulder, 2707 Spruce Street, a community-minded consignment clothing store, local product outlet and creative craft lab. (That, darlings, is a story in itself, which is coming soon.)
O’Neal and Shoulz promise live music and festivities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 26 and 27, as well as itsy-bitsy teenie-weenies in sizes that run across the board, from XS to XL. “How we’re going to find an extra-large in Boulder, I don’t know,” O’Neal quips. “There are probably only about seven of them in town.” But don’t be shy, even if you are one of those seven. And Altitude Exchange hopes to hold more sales, featuring anything from high-fashion footwear to sports gear, in the future; for more information, visit www.altitudeexchange.com.
Women of color, take note: When your wedding day comes around, y’all better be prepared to strut. Advice on how to do that – to an Afrocentric beat – will be in the spotlight at Sunday’s Forever Yours Diamonds and Chocolate Wedding Expo, a unique event hosted by the MSCD Black Student Alliance that’s geared specifically to the African-American community. Front and center at the expo, which includes wedding vendors and live entertainment, is a multi-talented fashion designer and chocolatier, Katherine House, whose fabulous wedding gowns incorporating African prints will be featured on the runway to the accompaniment of heritage-affirming spoken-word poetry. Not only that, but spokeswoman Ruthanne Johnson hints at what promises to be a total cultural experience -- “something,” she teases, “with bangles and bellies, and maybe toe rings.” Git down!
Attend Forever Yours from 6 to 9 p.m. April 27, at the Tivoli Turnhalle, 900 Auraria Parkway, Auraria Campus; admission is $20, or $15 with canned food donation. For a reservation call 1-888-298-2368.
Finally, we can’t think of a better way to spend May Day than at one of our favorite stores ever: Talulah Jones, a treasure of a gift and baby store at 1122 East 17th Avenue (here’s what we said about it in 2003). Owner Robin Lohre will be feting local artist Lizzie Kienast at the evening garden party, which features Kienast’s fetching, feminine works, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, but it’s also an opportunity for shopaholics to peruse Talulah’s latest wares for spring.
In Talulah’s new and growing “green” section, Lohre stacks all manner of reusable totes and water bottles (the store is even offering a ten-cent rebate to those who purchase and use a line of house-designed, exclusive Talulah totes), books on the art of green living, recycled paper pads and notecards, organic baby clothes and scrumptious, pear-flavored green tea mints, among other things. In the kids’ room, there are adorable spring togs, Kathe Kruse handmade dolls and wooden fairy houses with mushroom furniture; for adults, Lohre’s added a new jewelry line, Lulu Designs, and expanded her stock of Korres all-natural body milks, scrubs and butters from Greece. “My whole staff now uses it from head to toe,” she notes.
But my personal faves are the “surprise boxes” from Re-ment Puchi Petites: collectible blind-box sets of miniature foods, such as mushrooms, sushi, bread and butter, or fairyland treats. Perfectly useless yet addictive, they make great party favors for children or adults. Go for it. Or to www.talulahonline.com. -- Susan Froyd
