Pretty in Pin Curls

In the old days – I’m talking the Golden Age of Hollywood – women knew their way around a pin curl. That’s when Veronica Lake made waves with that sexylicious one that fell over one eye, and every girl dreamed of looking like a Vargas pinup. But in this day and age, it’s the rare bird, a stylist like Colorado hair artist Lauren Rennells, who can still pull off the looks once sported by the likes of Bette Davis, Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe and, oh what the hell, even Lucy Ricardo. And Rennells, who works primarily in the photography and film biz, has perfected those retro 'dos so well that she’s collected her modern reruns in a book, Vintage Hairstyling, that’s all ratted up with page after page of stunning pompadours, victory rolls and Ava Gardner bobs.

Rennells will introduce her hair primer, which sells for $29.95, and demonstrate some of her tricks from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Boss Unlimited, 10 S. Broadway. Or go to www.vintagehairstyling.com to purchase the book online. For information about the event call Boss, 303-871-0373.
