History, After a Fashion

I have spent much of the past week researching 1858 fashions for a Colorado Inside Out show that goes back in time, and as anyone who tunes in to KBDI: Channel 12 tonight at 8 p.m. will see, the results are not pretty (see above) Rumor has it that 150 years ago, women were so rare in the camps that would become Denver that the mere sight of a bonnet had men running into the streets -- I'm willing to bet they were running in sheer terror.

For a more aesthetically pleasing -- and certainly more historically accurate -- look back in time, head over to the Governor's Mansion, which is not only offering free, self-guided tours every Saturday this summer, but on July 5 will offer family activities all day, including music from the 1850s with Rex Rideout, and displays of old-fashioned clothing.

The Governor's Mansion is at 400 East Eighth Avenue; for more information, go to www.coloradohistory.org. -- Patricia Calhoun
