The Cat's Pajamas

Back to Basics

Wed Sep 03, 2008 at 09:50:45 AM

Back to the regular school schedule means going back to tests, homework and classes -- and finding a way to be comfy and still stylish. When I returned to school, I noticed that every class has its own style. For seniors, it's super casual -- a simple T-shirt and jean shorts. Juniors are cute but casual, usually wearing a loose fashion top with jeans. Underclassmen really seem to care about how they dress, and sometimes they overdo it by wearing bright-colored tees, short shorts, designer handbags and lots of accessories.

What class are you in? Here are some ideas to help fit in with the latest class trends. The girls' looks are from Forever 21 and the boys' fashions are from Heritage 1981.

Silver Jeans grand opening party hosted by Teen Vogue

As I walked through the brand new glass doors of the first ever Silver Jeans store, I was welcomed by the smell of crisp denim, the sound of The Beatles playing in the background, and a friendly staff ready for action! First, asking to see Michele Bedrink, I looked around noticing the color palette of warm earth tones, and a glass water feature in the back that creates an elite, feng shui-friendly feeling. Instantly, I was shaking Michele’s hand and being told, “It’s so nice to meet you, thank you so much for coming and we are going to hook you up with a pair of jeans because, we can’t have you walking around in someone else’s jeans!” I was in such a state of shock, that all I could do was smile and say, “ No, thank you!” Immediately, Michele took my hand, leading the way to the founder/president of this pristine denim company, Michael Silver.

I found myself shaking the hand of Mr. Silver! I knew I had to make the most of this moment -- I mean, who gets to meet a designer just any ordinary day? “Hello, I’m Sarah and I’m with Westword!” I said. Michael replied, “Hello Sarah, I’m Michael. Nice to meet you!”

Then, with no hesitation I asked, “May I ask you a couple questions?” Michael was more then happy to answer these questions that I’m sure he has heard umpteen times before!

Silver Jeans: Affordable denim with a designer fit

Tue Aug 12, 2008 at 11:50:41 AM

silverjeanadd.jpg

When I was told that I was being sent to a Teen Vogue party on August 16th to promote the first ever Silver Jeans store opening, I was ecstatic! The new store is in the Park Meadows Mall, and I thought before I went I should research the jeans and see what makes them so special.

Silver Jeans was established in 1991 to help customers find affordable jeans that fit as well as higher priced designer brands. The company was founded by Michael Silver, and he is now the president. While Silver Jeans don't come cheap -- they range from about $50-$80 a pair -- they do come with a promise of satisfaction. Michael’s mission was to make sure these jeans were sold at a competitive price by department stores such as Nordstrom, Dillard’s, and Macy's. As the jeans became more popular, Silver started to expand and the denim has since been sold primarily at specialty chains like The Buckle, Vanity Shops, and Bang Bang. Silver is known for their great products, and they've also invested in making leather belts, handbags, and accessories. Even if you are on a tight budget, a pair of Sliver jeans is a great investment if you want a good fit and quality denim! Stay tuned to my teen fashion blog for a complete run-down of my experience at the Teen Vogue launch party.

The Urban Hippie Goes Back to School

Tue Jul 29, 2008 at 01:11:40 PM

Summer is slowly coming to an end, and we are all racing out to do our back to school shopping. It's important to keep in mind your own unique style, while also nodding to the fashions and styles of fall.

If your style is: “Urban Hippie”

Look for Hippie inspired tops that are oversized creating a flow.

Cross Stitch Accent Tunic - $27.80 Forever 21

With an oversized, flowing shirt, you don’t want to add any more volume. Look for a skinny jean to wear on the bottom.

If your shirt has embroidering on it, don’t wear a chunky necklace, this will only add chaos! A sweet chain with some beads will be perfect!

During daytime, pick a casual shoe, like a sandal for comfort and style!

The Preppy Side of Grunge

Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 02:16:56 PM

As promised, I’m bringing you the popular teen "preppy" style and mixing it with this fall's latest fashions. Shopping at stores like American Eagle, Hollister, and Abercrombie & Fitch will give you great tools to add a pop of color to the grunge styles that are in right now.

Keep your favorite Polo in a bright color:

Rock n' Grunge

Tue Jul 15, 2008 at 01:24:06 PM

Teen fashion correspondent Sarah Bolliger brings us the teen view of the latest summer fashion trends.

Fashion in the '90s consisted of oversized shirts that didn’t show off your natural curves paired with holly jeans or leftover leggings from the '80s. This style is starting to reaapear with a twist. Oversized shirts/hoodies are being paired together with straight leg jeans, and shoes -- including Converse, ballet flats, gladiator sandals, and chunky heels. Many of the shoes have a punk rock theme and come in patterns such as plaids, checkers, stripes, and studs. But, what if your style isn’t ‘punk rock’? For the next four weeks, I will take popular teen styles and mix and match them with fall’s hottest fashions from stores such as Forever 21, Hot Topic and American Eagle Outfitters.

If your style is Punk:

Add some color with striped straight leg jeans.
