Denver Unveils its Free Bike Program for the DNC

old%2520bike.jpgAt 2 p.m. today, the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee was scheduled to officially unveil its “Freewheelin” bike-sharing program, in which 1,000 bikes will be distributed around the streets of Denver to be freely used by visitors and the public during the Democratic National Convention, August 25-28. Local luminaries are clearly fond of the plan, which was developed with support from Humana health care company and the Boulder-based bike advocacy group Bikes Belong; both Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Governor Bill Ritter planned to attend the conference today. To find out more about the free-bike program – including its potential to evolve into an ongoing, bike-powered transportation system throughout Denver – check out the story we wrote about it several weeks ago: “Free and Easy.” – Joel Warner
