Obama versus the Denver Broncos at Invesco

Categories: The Donkey Show

The Denver Broncos took on the Dallas Cowboys at Invesco Field on Saturday. It was the second of four pre-season games. Not that it matters, but the Broncos won.

More than 60,000 people were there (in spite of the rain), which is good for a game that doesn't count. But it was still about 10-15,000 fewer fans than what a regular season game sees and well shy of the number who will turn out for Barack Obama’s presidential nomination acceptance speech on August 28.

Not that I will be at the big event. I, like nearly everyone I know, got the dreaded reject letter from the Obama campaign after the online speech sweepstakes (which didn’t help my post-traumatic-World-Series-ticket-fiasco-stress-disorder).

But when I closed my eyes tight and cupped my hands over my ears while I was at the game, I was able to pretend for a second that instead of hearing new Broncos P.A. announcer Alan Roach saying "In-Com-Plete!," I was actually hearing Obama saying "Change-Is-Neat!"

And frankly, after speech attendees stand for three hours in a security line and then sit through the 1,000 or so speakers who will spout hyberbole (without any respite from beer vendors) before Obama actually takes the stage, I’m guessing they will want to close their eyes and wish, for just a moment, that they were at a Bronco game instead.

Sour grapes? Never heard of them. – Jonathan Shikes
