Plenty of newspapers resist specifically labeling their editorial stance for fear of alienating readers of different political stripes or limiting their ability to respond to unforeseen events. But not the Colorado Springs Gazette, which clearly spells out its slant in this Craig's List post headlined "Editorial Page Editor, Writer: Libertarian Thinker?"

The item begins like so: "Seasoned Writers take notice because this type of opportunity rarely comes along. The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colorado is looking for a libertarian thinker who can consistently write distinctive, persuasive editorials for our daily newspaper and online in tune with our philosophy of (a) respect for the individual, (b) limited government, (c) free markets, and (d) free trade."

Who fits that bill? According to this page at TheAdvocates.org, famous libertarians include Clint Eastwood, Drew Carey, Russell Means, John Stossel, Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, Kurt Russell and Dwight Yoakam. But we'd like to nominate pop singer Melanie, pictured here. After all, she could probably squeeze the gig into her schedule, since she hasn't had a Top 40 hit since 1973 -- and she's clearly a true believer. The aforementioned site quotes her as saying, "I'm a total Libertarian. I am not a Democrat, a Socialist, or a Republican. Vote Libertarian!"

Looking for a solution, Gazette managers? Melanie's got a brand new key. -- Michael Roberts
