Dearly Beloved,

We are gathered here today to mourn the loss(es) of the Broncos 2007 season. When good teams are killed off at such an early stage, it’s tempting to look back with anger and bitterness. The shocking defeat at the hands of the Raiders leaves us confused and searching for answers. The questionable QB draw that forced a tying field goal instead of a winning touchdown against the Packers has many of us asking “why?” And the utter senselessness of the Bears loss has shaken the faith of even our most deeply devout followers.

Yet we must not allow these tragic events to cast a pale over the joyous moments we shared. We should cherish for years to come the beautiful memory of two blowout victories against the Chiefs. The fire-drill finish against Buffalo was one of the most thrilling moments of this or any season. And the performance of second-year players Elvis Dumervil, Tony Scheffler, Jay Cutler, and Brandon “The human highlight reel” Marshall portends better days ahead.

Processing our grief is the first step toward acceptance. It’s difficult to come to terms with our playoff aspirations being cut down by the likes of the Lions and Texans. Few of our high-priced free agent acquisitions are worth what we’re paying them. There is no sense in our defense.

So as we lay this season down to rest, we recognize, as with all things in life, the highs and lows, and turn instead toward accepting and ultimately embracing the lessons provided by it’s untimely sacrifice.

In our Lord John Elway’s name we pray…

Amen
