We'll Toast to That

The state Senate approved a bill last week that would finally allow liquor sales on Sundays, and the measure will now move to the House. But that might not be the biggest change for one of the Denver area’s largest spirits superstores. Applejack Wine & Spirits in Wheat Ridge is looking into the possibility of accepting credit cards – something it hasn’t done in its forty-plus years, says co-owner Alan Freis. “We just never did. It’s never hurt our business,” he explains.

But Applejack could finally enter the last millennium if plans – “nothing is in cement,” Fries warns – to add a credit card system work out. “It’s just time,” he explains. That is certainly welcome news for anyone who has ever learned about the store’s maddening no-plastic policy from a cashier with a cart loaded full of booze and no cash or checks. – Jonathan Shikes
