40 Years of the Libre Artist Commune

The fortieth anniversary of Libre, an artist commune, which drew a large crowd to the Huerfano Valley June 20 to 22, was a fantasmagoria of groovy tunes, far-out art and hip-cat reunions. The first day, the estranged, mainstreamed ex-hippies set up at the campground, then gathered for a semi-formal art show in Dean's Dome. Local residents from nearby Gardner joined in the second day of festivities, which involved tie-dye T-shirts, bell bottoms, acoustic as well as electric music, poetry and food vendors. The occasion revived many relationships, challenging people to remember each other's names -- and whether they had ever slept together.
