Chandler Romeo’s Heart Land

Rudi Cerri, the public-art administrator for the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs, has organized a series of art shows over the past year at the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. The latest is Heart Land, which features a dozen large-scale pastel drawings by Chandler Romeo that depict landscapes of the eastern plains punctuated by manmade elements (one is pictured).

Romeo is well-known in Denver -- she and her husband, Reed Weimer, have been the prime movers behind the art-friendly strip at 37th Avenue and Navajo Street -- and a number of her pieces can be found in various public and private collections in the region. She’s also a past winner of the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and the Denver Art Museum’s AFKEY Award. She is represented by Sandra Phillips Gallery.

There’s only one problem with Heart Land: It can only be seen by those who have tickets to productions at the Buell, which is a pretty steep price to pay to see an art show, no matter how good it is. Well, there is one way to get into the Buell free: Go to the opening reception tonight, Monday, June 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, call 720-865-4313 or go to www.denvergov.org/publicart. -- Michael Paglia
