Shmuck of the Week: So, Obama, Dobson and Nader walk into a bar….

Attacked from the left. Attacked from the right.

By the time the Democratic National Convention gets underway in Denver to crown Barack Obama as the nominee, there may not be much of him left.

On June 24, Focus on the Family leader James Dobson, who has been spewing his own brand of right-wing, vitriolic gospel from Colorado Springs for years, accused Obama of "deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own world view, his own confused theology." And that wasn’t all.

Dobson, speaking on his radio program, went on for nearly twenty minutes, singling out comments Obama made in 2006 that politicians must take into account a variety of views on moral issues. Outlandish! Outrageous!

"Now that is a fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution," Dobson said. "This is why we have elections. To support what we believe to be wise and moral. We don't have to go to the lowest common denominator of morality, which is what he is suggesting."

But then came consumer crusader and Green Party cad Ralph Nader who, despite having lasted far beyond his expiration date, decided to lambaste Obama in an interview with the Rocky Mountain News in which he said the only thing that differentiates Obama from any other mainstream candidate is that he is "half African-American." Then he accused Obama of trying to "talk white… He wants to show that he is not… another politically threatening African-American politician. He wants to appeal to white guilt."

Ouch.

But while Nader’s comments make him look like a chode, even an asshat, Dobson takes it one level higher, reaching the esteemed designation: Shmuck of the Week.
