Signs of the Times

You see a lot of things on a 950-mile road trip, although you don't see them for long if you're trying to average 77 miles (with gas/bathroom stops). But on that long trip yesterday from Clearwater Junction, Montana, to Denver, Colorado, the most welcome sight of all may have been the sign on the Loaf 'N' Jug just south of the Wyoming border, that showed gas was finally down below four bucks a gallon. (Most expensive gas: $4.33, at Garryowen, just south of the Little Bighorn battle site.)

But while gas is cheaper in Colorado, good spelling is at a premium, judging from two signs spied along I-25, one promising "Misc. Itims," the other noting that 'If your not the lead dog, the scenery never changes."

But it can go by more quickly. -- Patricia Calhoun
