Your Show Lands McCain, Obama

Your Show, the 9News public-affairs program hosted by Adam Schrager, has come a long way since its 2007 launch, which was outlined in this Message column from that year. The July 6 edition of the production, which airs Sundays at 10:30 a.m. on Channel 20, boasted an extended conversation with presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, and its July 13 version is expected to feature a chat with Obama's likely opponent, sure-to-be Republican presidential nominee John McCain.

Schrager has used the various candidates' frequent Colorado visits to Your Show's advantage, arranging to gab with Obama during his stop in Colorado Springs on July 2 -- and he's expected to quiz McCain today, July 7, when the Arizona senator plans to speak to a group gathered at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

Given that Your Show pivots on questions suggested by viewers submitted at the program's website, it's no surprise that scoops have been in short supply. On July 7, the clip of Obama used on Channel 9's morning news block found him discussing the young people who've been attracted to politics by his campaign -- a topic that falls just below the debate over whether apple pie is better than cherry pie on the controversy scale. (The entire interview can be found in the "archive" section at the link above.) Then again, Channel 9 deserves props for maintaining a forum where newsmakers can talk at length, not just in ten-second bites. For that alone, Your Show has more than earned its air time. -- Michael Roberts
