Brandon Marshall and Arrested Development

Did we take that before you were ready, Mr. Marshall?
Yessir, Brandon Marshall sounded like Mr. Responsibility at an August 6 press conference following the announcement of his three-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy -- punishment meted out due in part to a domestic-violence warrant signed out against him in March. And maybe he'll be able to stay out of trouble off the field and excel on it after doing his penance. After all, he's got the support of recently retired Rod Smith, who knows a little something about what Marshall's going through: In January 2000, Smith was arrested for third-degree assault and harassment following an argument with his common-law wife (he was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to undergo counseling), but he got things back on track in time to earn the respect of teammates and community members alike. Nonetheless, the fact remains: Few Broncos who've been in trouble with police during their playing days have gone down among the team's greats.

Examples? Below, find a baker's dozen of busted Broncs. The jury's still out on a few of them -- but the majority hardly make up a stellar roster from the standpoint of Colorado gridiron accomplishments.

Melvin Bratton, running back: Arrested in July 1991 along with three teammates on charges of assault and resisting arrest.

Michael Brooks, linebacker: Arrested in July 1991 in relation to the aforementioned incident involving Bratton and two other teammates.

Darrell Gardener, defensive tackle: Arrested in July 2003 on suspicion of disorderly conduct following a dustup at an International House of Pancakes restaurant.

Daniel Graham, tight end: Arrested in January 2008 on suspicion of criminal mischief after a complaint from a former girlfriend.

Brian Griese, quarterback: Arrested in October 2000 on suspicion of drunken driving.

Darrell Hackney, quarterback: Arrested in December 2007 on suspicion of drunk driving.

Ronnie Haliburton, linebacker: Arrested in July 1991 in relation to the aforementioned incident involving Bratton and two other teammates.

Andre Hall, running back: Arrested in February 2008 for driving with a revoked, suspended or canceled driver's license.

David Kircus, wide receiver: Arrested in May 2007 on suspicion of second-degree assault.

Alton Montgomery, cornerback-safety: Arrested in July 1991 in relation to the aforementioned incident involving Bratton and two other teammates.

Russell Newman, defensive tackle: Arrested in July 2003 in the previously mentioned IHOP altercation that also involved Gardener.

Todd Sauerbrun, punter: Cited in December 2007 on a simple assault charge.

Marcus Thomas, defensive tackle: Arrested in March 2008 on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance.

A lucky thirteen? Not exactly. When it comes to footballing redemption, Marshall has some long odds stacked against him. -- Michael Roberts
