Jared Polis' sexuality: no big deal
In following up on Democratic congressional candidate Jared Polis' primary victory, the August 14 Denver Post put the focus on his homosexuality. "Polis' Win a Big Gain for Gay Movement" appeared on page one of the Denver & the West section, while the editoral page featured a full-color note that reads, "It cost him $5.3 million of his own money to do it, but Jared Polis took a giant step Tuesday toward being the first openly gay male non-incumbent ever elected to Congress when he won the Democratic nomination in the 2nd Congressoinal District. Get in on the discussion at blogs.denverpost.com/opinion."
So I stopped by the page in question and was left wondering, "What discussion?"
At this writing, no comments had been posted on either the main article or the piece intended to start the conversation: "Polis Makes Political History" by Bob Ewegen.
This is no knock on the Post, whose site frequently serves as the setting for lively online back-and-forths. Rather, it's an indication, I hope, that more and more people just don't care that much whether someone is a homosexual or not.
The Post wasn't out of line for putting together stories and blogs on this subject. Polis, who opened up about his lifestyle some time after the publication of a 2004 Westword profile, is indeed breaking ground. And if few people are shocked that he's doing so, that's a very good thing. -- Michael Roberts
