Shmuck of the Week: Travis Henry
Travis Henry has problems. Lots of problems.
The former Denver Broncos running back ran himself right out of the NFL – and his lucrative salary – after getting busted last year for smoking marijuana (he had signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract, but ended up playing only one year for the Broncos). Although Henry won an appeal of this violation of the league’s drug policy, team coach Mike Shanahan released the oft-injured Henry last summer, saying he was simply too inconsistent on the field.
On Tuesday, Henry was seen carrying a duffle bag full of cocaine out of a house in Centennial. He ran from the police but was quickly surrounded and arrested, according to authorities. He has been charged with intent to posses and distribute cocaine; it’s a case that the police have been working on for some months.
Why would Henry get involved with drugs at this level? Perhaps he's been having more trouble making his child-support payments.
After all, it was disclosed last year that he has fathered nine children by nine different women in at least four Southern states. This stat came to light after Henry landed in court for failing to pay child support for one of his offspring.
Or maybe he’s fathered even more kids since then. You do need eleven players to field a football team, and Henry is almost there. If he is convicted, however, it’s possible a prison sentence could put a damper on an all-Henry squad.
