Before you get all excited about taking the kids to Michael Franti’s Harvest Ball circus matinee next weekend, cancel the funny hats and get a grip. Sold out. Sure, she looks cute in that purple tulle tutu, but don’t drag your three-year-old down there to stand in a line that never ends.

Still, if you really want to let your little urban angels in on some bona fide vaudevillian action, here’s a homegrown solution -- The Squirm Burpee Circus: A Vaudevillian Melodrama, presented tonight at the Oriental Theater by our own homegrown Handsome Little Devils, a troupe of four multi-talented folks who do just about everything themselves, except for the audience-participation (one adult and one child are delegated part of each show’s denouement).

Circus member Cole Schneider says the family-friendly evening, which premiered last night, has a classic melodrama plot with a villain, the good guys and the damsel in distress, as well as plenty of swing dancing, singing, chainsaw juggling, bullwhip tricks, comedy and more. Comedy, especially. "I think there’s probably a laugh every thirty seconds," Schneider promises, and who could doubt her? This is a performance spangled with slapstick, human cannonballs and acrobatics of all sorts. Local band the Reals will also join in the fun tonight, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Oriental, 4335 W. 44th Avenue. Admission is $12 in advance or $15 at the door, and Schneider says to get your tickets early or you’ll be back in that same old line to nowhere.
