Today's Night & Day featured event: Girls Rock! (Are you ready, Denver?)
The film Girls Rock! is strictly a girl thing, and by that I mean a little girl thing. The visual story of the original Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, it aims straight between the eyes of any rebel tween or teen girl with an itch to be a rock star. Oh yes, and it's fascinating for their parents, too, who might be charmed, knowingly unsurprised, amused beyond belief or terrified to death by what unfolds on the screen.
We first wrote about it last spring in this Night & Day entry, but as the story unfolds, it's worth mentioning again, and here's why: The all-girl camp, which is spreading across the nation on the strength of the film's message, is also coming to Denver next summer. It will arrive in conjunction with the local Colorado Nonprofit Development Center and the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, a group that's also sponsoring an ambitious 50 Shows in 50 States national fundraiser this month.
In Denver, the GR benefit events begin tonight at 7 p.m. with a film screening and live music by Jen Korte at Hooked on Colfax, 3215 E. Colfax Avenue; on Sunday, December 14, Korte, along with Robyn Assmunstad, Kate Wirsing and Molly Cherington, will perform for a 21+ crowd at the Meadowlark, 2701 Larimer Street. Admission on either evening is $6. For fundraiser details go to the GRCA website or visit Girls Rock Denver for the latest on the local camp. -- Susan Froyd
