Today's Night & Day featured event: Shop, don't drop, in Olde Town Arvada

Categories: Things to Do

An old German tradition, the lagniappe (pronounced lawn-yahp) offers merchants an opportunity to show appreciation for their customers, both loyal and brand-new, by opening their doors for a snow-kissed evening stroll. In other words, it's a tradition tailor-made for the already cozy boutiques of Olde Town Arvada, where retailers host the annual Olde Town Arvada Lagniappe, a free, old-timey holiday-season kickoff complete with carriage rides, refreshments and special deals.

Begin your lagniappe experience at today 5 p.m. in Olde Town Square, West 57th Avenue and Olde Wadsworth Boulevard, with a community tree lighting by the mayor, visits with Santa and carols sung in bluesy fashion by none other than local diva Hazel Miller. And then, it's off to the streets for carriage rides (free with a canned food donation for the Arvada Food Bank), shopping, noshing and gift certificate giveaways. Just look for the "I'm Open" sign in business windows for shops keeping extended hours; you'll also be able to pick up printed Olde Town shopping guides from participating retailers. If only all shopping events could be this gentle and fun.

Carriage rides will continue on Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m. through December 19. For more information, click here or call 303-420-6100. -- Susan Froyd
