Will the Denver Rescue Mission's dinner be chile?
The Denver Rescue Mission and more than fifty volunteers are serving up their traditional holiday dinner to homeless men, women and children today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lawrence Street Shelter, 1130 Park Avenue West.
New this year: every guest - and the organization expects about 500 people - will get a blanket thanks to the Mission's Blessed with a Blanket drive.
The menu includes honey-glazed ham, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, candied yams, cornbread, green salad and pie, and it will be served by a couple of celebrity volunteers, including city councilwomen Jeanne Robb and Marcia Johnson, KYGO DJ Kelly Ford and ESPN broadcaster and former Bronco Mark Schlereth.
The only thing missing? Schlereth's surprisingly tasty Stinkin' Good Green Chile Sauce, which he unveiled last May at a south Denver King Soopers and which he relentlessly pitches during guest spots on 104.3/The Fan.
So while green chile isn't typically part of Christmas dinner, don't be surprised to see 500 homeless people with grins on their faces and spicy tears in their eyes. -- Jonathan Shikes
