Today's Night & Day featured event: Superheroes fly at the Art Students League of Denver

Categories: Things to Do

trunks4_06_Eggs.jpgI clearly remember what kinds of pictures we drew when I was a kid: battles with tiny bullets and daggers flying everywhere, helicopters, horses (me), fairies, juvenile political cartoons and everyone's reckoning of what a superhero, usualy caped, should be and look like, beyond that he or she should be able to fly. I would have imagined that things hadn't really changed all that much down the generations. But now I think I'm in for a surprise when the Art Students League of Denver unveils and awards the winners of its Super Hero Drawing Contest tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Works by kids of all ages will be featured, including a handful of creative concoctions so loved by the cast of tRUNKs, Buntport Theater's children's serial comedy, that they were incorporated into the plots of last week's tRUNKs performances. Cast member Jessica Roblee sites these as Buntport favorites: "There's my favorite, Awkward Man. He's been causing awkward silences since infancy. There's Soup Girl: She's just all about soup (and she can fly). And Dr. Time: His brain was exchanged for a clock, and he loves to fly kites."

The love spilleth over: A handful of regular tRUNKs characters will also be on hand tonight for opening reception festivities at the League, 200 Grant Street. In addition to the awards ceremony, ASLD will hand out super-secret goody bags to kids attending and offer drawings for tRUNKs tix and art supplies.

Up, up and away! Admission is free; for information visit the ASLD site or call 303-778-6990.
