Today's Night & Day featured event: Courting Condi dances around the truth
Don't be fooled: There is plenty of meat in Courting Condi, the unique undercover-muckraking biopic about the imaginary romance between an obsessed musician (now-adult child star Devin Ratray, best known for his role as big brother Buzz in Home Alone, who plays himself) and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Director Sebastian Doggart, who calls the project "the first musical docu-tragi-comedy ever," is a Brit who thinks Americans prefer to get their politics in the form of entertainment. So he decided to roll up all the goods on Condi in a sugar-coated Borat-style musical that mixes truth and fiction in a very clever way.
Does it work? Plenty of critics think so -- and you'll have a chance to decide for yourself when the film screens at 6:30 p.m. tonight in Davis Auditorium, Sturm Hall, 2000 E. Asbury Avenue, on the campus of Condi's alma mater, the University of Denver. After the film, Doggart will field questions from the audience; then DU professor Alan Gilbert and Colorado State Sen. Shawn Mitchell (R-23) lock horns to debate on the topic, "Should Condoleezza Rice Stand Trial for War Crimes." No stone unturned.
