Today's featured event: Get into the City Spirit tonight at El Camino
Before LoDo was club central and all cleaned up -- in fact, before LoDo was LoDo -- the visionary couple Mickey Zeppelin and Susan Wick opened The City Spirit Café, at 14th and Blake. A serendipitous art-cave and basement bookstore lined with mosaic and bright colors, City Spirit was a place where the hip and artsy crowd could convene in a big-city atmosphere that was new to the block. Fashion, funky food and drink, music and conversation were united within the eatery's whimsically decorated walls and tables (some of which now live a second life at Taxi's Fuel Café), and the famed La-La, the City Spirit's signature cocktail, flowed... at least until you reached your limit of four.
RiNo artist Tracy Weil spent a long while running the show at City Spirit, where he waited on tables, bartended and eventually managed and booked the joint. And though City Spirit closed its doors around ten years ago, Weil recently resurrected its memory with a loving memoir at BuckFifty.org, the website that Weil and other Denver habitués concocted to celebrate Denver's 150th anniversary. But tonight, there'll be a real-time component to his City Spirit memories for anyone interested in sharing theirs, when BuckFifty hosts a City Spirit Reunion Happy Hour from 5 to 7 p.m. at El Camino, 3628 W. 32nd Avenue. Drink specials, priced at $1.50 per, will abound, as will the new La-La (pronounced the T-La, with a Tequila base). Go to the El Camino website for directions or BuckFifty.org for details.
