Update: Coloradoan/Denver Newspaper Agency partnership (and 48 layoffs) confirmed

The basic information contained in a blog published earlier this morning under the headline "Report: Coloradoan Outsourcing Printing to Denver Newspaper Agency, Eliminating as Many as Fifty Jobs" has been confirmed. Moments ago, the Fort Collins Coloradoan issued a press release about its new agreement with the Denver Newspaper Agency to take over printing of the northern Colorado daily, owned by Gannett. Coloradoan publisher Kim Roegner says 48 positions have been eliminated, although the workers will stay on the job for the next couple of months and receive severance.

Coloradoan, Denver Newspaper Agency create printing and distribution partnership

The Denver Newspaper Agency will handle printing and distribution for the Fort Collins Coloradoan and related products beginning May 12 under a new partnership being announced today.

"The current economic conditions and the changes for the future of our industry have indicated it's time to take a hard look at our operations and we're fortunate to have a partner as strong as DNA to work with," said Kim Roegner, president and publisher of the Coloradoan. "This has been one of the toughest decisions of my career."

The DNA installed new state-of-the-art presses in 2006. Because of the speed of the presses, Coloradoan news and delivery deadlines won't be affected, Roegner said. Customers will continue to get their papers by 6 a.m. weekdays, 6:30 a.m. Saturdays and 7 a.m. Sundays.

The Coloradoan press, housed at 1212 Riverside, will be closed. The changes will result in about 48 layoffs at the Coloradoan, Roegner said.

The affected employees will continue to work for the next two months and will receive severance packages, Roegner said.
