Public-TV station Channel 12 embraces... Australian Rules Football?
A Flickr photo This is how they do it down under.
At 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. tonight, Channel 12 will broadcast the Australian Rules Football Match of the Week. Fans who visit this page on the Australian Football Association of North America website can vote for which contest they'd like to see in the spotlight.
Such fare seems unusual for Channel 12, a hyper-local public-TV station that's broadcasting the show on its MhZ Worldview affiliate, accessible at digital channel 12.3. But station spokeswoman Marcia Simmons, corresponding via e-mail, hints that more fare of this sort is available under the signal's auspices than most people realize. E-mail from Marcia Simmons, Channel 12 spokeswoman:
Yes, KBDI is carrying a bit more sports and definitely is developing more "outdoors" programming. This certainly fits our Colorado audience!
The Aussie Rules Football season has been part of the MHz Worldview lineup, and KBDI started carrying MHz Worldview as one of our digital channels (12.3) a couple of years ago. The matches have a loyal following. (Our programming director tells me of an Australian woman who now lives in Wyoming who drove here to watch her team in the Aussie Rules Football's version of the Super Bowl.)
One of many Aussie Football viewer comments -- one that I saved from July of last year:
"Wow! A little over two months ago we got the digital converter box, and ever since we are so hooked on your three stations! Thank you soo much for providing us access to Aussie Football on 12-3, we are hooked! We (my husband & I & neighbors) are wondering if 12-1 or 12-3 will be covering the USAFL matches at all? All we know, is we can not get enough of these stations, and rarely tune into any of the big 3 networks, except for maybe local news. Keep up the great work!"
ADDITIONAL SPORTS/OUTDOORS PROGRAMMING....we have a block of programming that will air Sunday afternoons starting April 12:
** "Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009," Sundays at 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., will feature yachting's premier racing events. It's a 39-part series hosted by Gary Jobson, an America's Cup champion and ESPN commentator as they circle the globe. With seven 70-meter yachts battling for nine months over 39,000 nautical miles, the race begins in Spain and from there sails via South Africa, India, Singapore, China, Brazil, Boston, Ireland and Sweden before the finishing in the Russian Baltic port of St. Petersburg.
** "Equitrekking," Sundays at 4:30 p.m. April 12-May 24, will take viewers on horseback adventures around the globe.
** "Fly Tying: The Angler's Art," Sundays at 4:30 p.m., starting June 14, will provide instruction on the art of tying fly patterns for fishing.
Our programming director tells me that he is on the lookout for more programming for this sports/outdoors program block.
