Today's featured event: Get face to face with the Mizel Museum Artist Alliance

The newly renamed Mizel Museum Artist Alliance wears its modern moniker with pride. Formerly known as the Colorado Jewish Artists Guild, the organization chose its altered designation in order to reflect a more international membership and scope of work. In celebration, the inward-looking art of self-portraiture seemed like a good genre for making a fresh statement as a new, improved community of locally based Jewish artists.

To that end, My Self: Original Self Portraits by the Artists of the Mizel Museum Artist Alliance, a members' group show, opens tonight at the Mizel Museum, 400 S. Kearney Street, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Featuring works in a wide variety of styles and media, both traditional and not-so, the exhibit showcases work by more than thirty members, including such distinguished artists as sculptor David Brass (an International Bienniale invitee who's contributed a marble sculpture, "A Father's Love") and Martin Mendelsberg (an award-winning graphic designer and instructor at the Rocky Mountain School of Design, whose archival print, "Alef Portrait," expresses a Holocaust theme).

My Self remains on view through September 1. Related events coming up later this summer include a panel discussion on blogging and an outdoor film series. For details go to www.mizelmuseum.org or call 303-394-9993.
