Wake-Up Call: Week starts with a win

It wasn't just the decisive win that made last night's Nuggets victory so gratifying. And it wasn't the fact that Denver looked so good -- if very, very wet -- on national TV. What was particularly sweet about this chapter in the Cinderella story is that the Nuggets were never supposed to be at the Pepsi Center last night; facility owner Stan Kronke had so little faith that his team would make the Western Conference finals that he'd let professional wrestling book it for a Memorial Day gig.

Just when you think you've got Denver figured out, this city will surprise you -- and the Nuggets had the entire country pinned last night.

And the country will be watching again on Wednesday. But in the meantime, Denver has some business to conduct at a series of town-hall meetings.

Joe Biden, the gaffe-a-minute vice president, is in town today to host a town-hall meeting on "Building a Strong Middle Class Through a Green Economy" at the Dernver Museum of Nature & Science. Details are evolving. (Biden will be giving the commencement address at the Air Force Academy tomorrow.)

A few blocks away at the Shorter Community African Methodist Episcopal Church, the sanctuary will turn into a place to build a strong lower and middle class, with workshops and seminars through the week, including a panel tonight on "Community Empowerment" and a final "Empowerment Sunday" workship service on May 31. For complete details, call 303-320-1712 or e-mail ShorterChurch@aol.org.

Howard Dean is coming to town for his own town-hall meeting on health-care reform at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at the First Unitarian Church, 1400 Lafayette Street; learn more by calling 1-802-651-3200 ext. 127. And Representative Jared Polis is offering a town-hall meeting on Afghanistan and Pakistan at 1 p.m. May 30 at Boulder County Democratic Party headquarters, 1725B in Boulder.
