We miss you already, Paula!: American Idol auditions in Denver, round two

Cheer up, Paula. You can always schedule a comeback tour. Straight up!
The American Idol auditions at Invesco Field last month attracted thousands of fame junkies, earned oodles of media attention and reportedly killed at least one dog. But today's session is the one that counts: It determines which folks who made it past the first level will actually be heading to Hollywood for the next round of a competition whose continued popularity outstrips its record for producing memorable artists. (Want to buy a barely used Taylor Hicks CD?) According to one of our Westword insiders, the judges flew in last night in advance of a grilling that's getting underway shortly at the 38th floor Pinnacle Club downtown -- all of them except Paula Abdul, who recently announced that she was leaving Idol in the most contemporarily cliched manner possible. Via Twitter.

I have mixed feelings about Abdul's departure. True, she made no sense most of the time, offered talent assessments that were typically insight-free, and on HD, she looks like one of the witches from Macbeth. But, on the other hand, she made no sense most of the time, offered talent assessments that were typically insight-free, and on HD, she looks like one of the witches from Macbeth! Here's hoping she and the Idol producers find a way to kiss and make up. Because it'll be too depressing if Abdul's next trip to Denver is for a Tuesday night showcase at the Buffalo Rose.
