Meet John Valentin, who Troy Tulowitzki joined in the MLB record books last night
Last night, Troy Tulowitzki had one of the best nights ever by a member of the Colorado Rockies, driving in seven runs and hitting for the cycle (thanks to a wild sprint that stretched a double into triple) in an 11-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Along the way, Tulo became just the second player in Major League Baseball history to hit for the cycle and complete an unassisted triple play, as he did in 2007 against the Atlanta Braves.

The only other person to complete this fete was shortstop/third-baseman John Valentin, who had a highly respectable if not quite Hall of Fame caliber career, mostly with the Boston Red Sox. Indeed, one Boston-centric blog lists him at number sixty among the top 100 Red Sox players in history, a slot behind Mike Timlin and one ahead of former Rockies outfielder Ellis Burks. And while Valentin retired in 2002 after a decade in the bigs, he's still part of the game, managing the minor-league Chattanooga Lookouts.
Too soon to know if Tulo will surpass these achievements. But if last night is any indication, he's definitely in the running.
