No vacation this year? Nintendo wants to help

Nintendo wants to take you here, via the Wii
Since you probably can't afford that getaway to a remote beach this year, how about the next best thing: video games. In this case, Wii Sports Resort, which is coming to Southwest Plaza, 8501 West Bowles Avenue in Littleton (www.southwestplaza.com), to show off the fancy-pants, new enhanced motion sensing abilities of the Wii MotionPlus accessory.

The just-released game allows you to engage in a dozen resort-themed activities, from wakeboarding and skydiving to Frisbee and archery, all taking advantage of the more sensitive, responsive motion-tracking abilities of the MotionPlus add-on. And it all happens on a "simulated island resort oasis" in the comfort of your home -- or at the Southwest Plaza in this case. Sure, if you've already bought the game, there's not much reason to go out (unless you want to show off your mad virtual skydiving skills). But if you're a Wii owner who wants to give it a test drive, or you just enjoy the silliness of watching people waggle that controller in the air, this could be an excellent opportunity.

The pixel-island vacation is happening from noon to 9 p.m. today through Saturday. It's free, although they may try to sell you some video games. Still, even if you come home with a Wii and a copy of Wii Sports Resort, it's a lot cheaper than a ticket to Hawaii. You'll earn major points with the kids and you're less likely to get sunburned.
