Today's featured event: Playground proves that sometimes the truth hurts-but we can fight back

After risking her neck going undercover in South Korean and Thai brothels and subsequently charting the spread of sex slavery throughout the world, filmmaker Libby Spears knows a thing or two about human trafficking. But none of that prepared her for the revelation she ultimately uncovered -- namely, that such exploitation, of children in particular, is not just a third-world occurrence. It's reportedly rampant in North America, as well. That only makes the unfolding story of Jaycee Dugard -- the subject of Playground, an eye-opening documentary by Spears -- more poignant.

The director will appear in person tonight at 7 p.m. for a special screening hosted by Barbara Bridges and Women + Film at the Starz FilmCenter, 900 Auraria Parkway in the Tivoli Student Center. A discussion and reception with Spears and Amanda Finger of the Polaris Project follow the harrowing two-hour film; admission for the entire evening is $25. Reserve tickets at the Denver Film Society website or call 303-595-3456 to get more information.
